My mother dotes on her Shih Tzu
he has snow mittens and more coats
than I do, but our neighborhood cats
run naked, baring the cold to chase
mice and run wild.
Cats revered in Egypt, captured
as sculptures in the 18th century
with mischievous smiles
and clothed in capes like superheroes.
Molded in bronze,
cats can last centuries
without corrosion, true
to themselves, fiercely independent
and loved for it.
